British messenger canines with their handler, France, during World War I
dog

Picture by Nationwide Library of Scotland
British messenger dogs with their handler, France, during World War I. A British soldier holds a few canines which had been skilled to carry messages involving the lines and command in the course of Globe War I. Normally the canines had been strays, so one particular breed of puppy could be not favored. Generally, even so, traditional doing work breeds, this sort of as collies, retrievers, or large terriers, ended up chosen for messenger function.

Messenger dogs have been based mostly in sectional kennels around the front lines. On typical every sectional kennel had 48 dogs and 16 handlers, a ratio that indicates how critical the dogs’ perform was at the front. Just before being shipped to France the canines were trained at the War Dog Instruction school in Shoeburyness.
